ICA COLLEGE - An Grianan
An Grianan is a residential college in Termonfechin, Co. Louth. It is a centre unique in Ireland which combines a mid-week break with courses in art, crafts, cookery, leisure, personal development and selfcare for individuals or groups of adults at any age and skill level.
An Grianán is held in trust by the Irish Countrywomen's Association.
It is open to both male and female guests; you do not have to be a member of ICA. The facility is available all year round for weekend, mid-week breaks and conferences and is renowned for it's hospitality, good food and warm welcome. www.an-grianan.ie
Friends of An Grianan FRIENDS OF AN GRIANÁN was started 50 years ago -1964- by some I.C.A. members under the chairmanship of the late Miss Joyce Nicholson.
Over the years many gifts have been given to An Grianán from the Friends’ money, they included kitchen equipment, carpets and bedroom furniture, etc.
In recent years Friends have voted overwhelmingly that the monies be spent on scholarships to An Grianán.
Subscription amounts determine the number of scholarships allocated each year, the draw for these takes place at Friends A.G.M. which is usually held on the last Saturday in June when all Friends are welcome.
Over the past few years we have provided An Grianán with four new sewing machines, paid for the wooden floor in one of the large rooms in the hort college, paid for the material used for the windows and stage in the Kellogg
Hall, funded for two new roll top heated trays for breakfasts or when An Grianán is having a function such as the Garden Party. We have asked The Manager of An Grianán, Anne Flanagan, for a wish list in order for us to fund raise for items
that are deemed necessary for the comfort of members and which will assist An Grianán.
The committee of Friends are not paid any travelling expenses, all monies collected, includingraffle monies, go into the account and at the AGM we hand over a cheque to fund any item that is required there.
We have a Friends’ Weekend at An Grianán in early spring and a mid week break in October when everyone is
welcome. You do not have to be a member of ICA or become a Friend.
Please make our Friends’ circle bigger by telling your friends--

ASSISI EMBROIDERY COURSE
A course in Assisi Embroidery will be held in An Grianan from Monday 16th June to Friday 20th June which is open to everyone. To book a place call 041 982 2119 or email [email protected]
What is Assisi Embroidery?
Assisi embroidery is a form of counted-thread embroidery based on an ancient Italian tradition where the background is filled with embroidery stitches and the main motifs are left unstitched. The name is derived from the Italian town of Assisi where the modern
form of the craft originated. Cross-stitch is used for the background and Blackwork Embroidery, i.e.Back stitch or Holbein stitch is then used to outline the motif and create the surrounding decorative scrollwork.
Assisi embroidery dates back to Italy in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the early articles were most often used for religious purposes. By the 16th century it had become more popular and used a wider range of motifs, many based on Renaissance imagery of ancient mythical creatures. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, however, this form of embroidery fell into decline and many of the designs and motifs were lost. It was only at the turn of the 20th century that the practice was revived in the Italian town of Assisi from which this form of embroidery gets its name.
Traditionally, motifs were largely heraldic while the colours of thread used were the traditional ones of red, blue, green or gold for the background, and black or brown for the outlines. In the last 20 years, a modern version of Assisi embroidery has evolved. Many different colours and patterns are used for the background, and the motifs are extremely varied. However, the traditional version is still practised in the town of Assisi where the local women sit in front of their houses and embroider Assisi work items for
the local shops.

Wellness Workshops for ICA members
An Grianán – Monday 21st January, 2013
Suicide or Survive (SOS) have been working closely with the ICA as part of our focus on mental health. A key focus is to bring Wellness Workshops to the community in an effort to educate all our communities and our future generations on mental health wellness so that we can break down stigma and bring the message of change to all segments of our society.
What better way for ICA members to understand and promote the Wellness Workshops, but by attending a workshop? Members can learn more about managing their own mental health while focussing on their own personal development.
Places at the Wellness Workshops are normally €200 per delegate but they are being offered to ICA members for €70 each. The workshop will be held at Kellogg Hall and will run from 10am to 5pm, with a hot lunch provided to all attendees.
What is a Wellness Workshop?
The Wellness Workshops were developed by SOS drawing on the organisation’s unique experience and expertise in the corporate, community and voluntary sectors. The one day workshop is presented and discussed in an informal and relaxed environment. Specific areas covered include relaxation and stress management, understanding the relationship between thoughts and emotions, developing a wellness toolkit and daily plan.
The workshop is facilitated by people with both lived life experiences and people with experience of working in the mental health sector. The workshop would benefit all people who are interested in mental health and wellness.
What do ICA members think of the Wellness Workshops?
SOS ran a Wellness Workshop at An Grianán in May, 2012. Attended by members of the ICA, the event received a very positive reaction. Commenting after the event, two members provided us with feedback noting “I learned a lot of coping skills during the course and I felt the better for it when I went home" and "I felt much better able to cope after the Wellness Workshop. I got a lot of helpful advice and techniques for coping with my home situation as my husband suffers from heavy depression".
We are delighted to work with SOS to bring the Wellness Workshop to An Grianán. As there is maximum capacity of 35 people and places are filling fast, if you would like to attend the event on 21st January please contact ICA Central Office on 01 6680002 to book your place.

FRIENDS OF AN GRIANAN - MID-WEEK BREAK November 2012
Marion Lyon, Maghera Guild and Sophia Whyte, Kildallan Guild attended the "Friends" break at An Grianan. Marion took part in the Christmas Crafts class and Sophia did the Christmas Cards. The entertainment on Wednesday evening took the form of a Mini-Bootcamp with three participants for each task. The first task was ironing and folding shirts. The second task was to decorate a Sponge Flan which was won by Marion Lyon. The judges were Edward Hayden - TV3 Chef, Breda McDonald and Josephine Helley. It was a fun evening with the ladies who were taking part in the "Singing for Pleasure" performing some of their songs and dancing followed in the bar. We enjoyed the wonderful food and friendship in An Grianan.
